The ALLEN Patrilineage 1 Descendancies

The ALLEN Patrilineage 1 Descendancies

The Evidence Backing the indented descendancy trees below

The indented descendancy trees below have been carefully vetted for plausibility, and are backed by citable evidence accessed and abstracted by the principal genealogist members of the project, or by me, the administrator. I may be contacted through the “Email JBR” button on the top right of the page, and the principal genealogist(s) who may be able to provide supporting evidence are listed in the head notes to their particular descendancy below (clicking on a name in the head note will take you to the project Directory of Researchers, and clicking on a full name in the Directory will bring up an email blank addressed to that person). A few of these genealogists have provided links from the head notes below to their own web pages or relevant posted material.

Much of the evidence supporting these posted pedigrees, though, will be found either in certain of the secondary sources listed in the project Bibliography, or in the papers or compilations of published abstracts that appear as links in the navigation panel of the main page of this patrilineage project. Also, beginning about 2019, I’ve sometimes included brief source citations pertinent to a particular line, either in prefatory comments, or by appending them to the line they pertain to within curly braces, like this: “{...}”.

What these trees cover

Each descendancy begins with the earliest known male ancestor of a particular sublineage and continues down to the ySTR-DNA-tested male descendant. Since this DNA patrilineage project is focused on tested or testable males who themselves bear the principal project surname, the reconstructed families in these descendancy trees have generally been pruned of daughters, and for recent families even of sons where they are known or believed to have died without issue— more often, though, non-ancestral sons have been flagged with “died without issue”, or words to that effect.

On the other hand, some early families or others of particular importance to the structure of the trees have been reconstructed in full, daughters and all; this has been done in part to account for otherwise puzzling gaps in the birth order where the accuracy of the estimated birth dates of the sons is of particular importance.

Doubtful (conjectural) persons are shaded in the color “yellow”; e.g. John??? DENNISON (say 1715 Ireland?? - ).

Doubtful ancestral links to conjectural sons are outlined in the color “tomato”, e.g. |.

Names, Dates & Places for each male in the trees below

The data posted below for each male of the patrilineage comprise (but only insofar as it can be specifically documented): his full name or middle initial(s); his date and place of birth; his date and place of death; the name(s) of his wife (or wives), and the date and place his marriage(s)—the parents of the wife may also be identified, e.g. Mary KING d/o (daughter of) John & Margaret.

Partial dates that are not backed by specific, unequivocal evidence are always qualified: approximate dates by “abt” guesstimated dates by “say”; or otherwise by “bef”ore, “by”,“aft”er, or “btw” (between), depending on the evidence. Approximated dates imply supporting evidence which merely fails of complete accuracy, while “say” dates are guesstimates based on typical patterns of the time, place, and social group.

Full evidence-backed specific dates posted prior to Mar2018 were truncated to just the year, but since then I’ve begun posting such dates in full and expanding certain earlier posted year dates to their full form as they have come to my attention. I’ve changed my earlier policy because full specific dates have their own inherent plausibility, implying as they do, specific evidential backing. Still, I’ve attempted to preserve the distinction between dates for which I’ve actually seen the evidence, and full dates that have merely been claimed by others, by sometimes enclosing the latter (merely claimed) dates within [square brackets] and sometimes appending a “?” when they seemed particularly doubtful.

Where dates from public/private vital records are supplemented by dates from gravestones, I’ve sometimes included this data like this “[GS:...]” For birth dates calculated from death date and age at death in years (whether “aged ##”, or “ae ## years” (meaning “in his ## year”) I’ve posted the specific date that’s the midpoint of the year period during which the birth occurred “±6m”.

Dates from 1Jan through 24Mar before 1752 when Britain finally adopted 1Jan (rather than 25Mar) as its New Year’s Day, are presented when at all possible as “double dated” years (reflecting both the old and new calendar) even where the date in the record specifies just a single year (e.g. “5Mar1715/6” where the double-dated year is specified in the original record; “5Mar1715[/6]” where it can be inferred with confidence; “5Mar1715[/6?]” where there is some doubt whether the single year date “1715” was according to the old calendar; or “5Mar171[5/]6” when the specified year “1716” was clearly according to the new calendar in effect outside of British areas.

Places are the specific jurisdictional places where the evidential records for the birth, marriage, or death event are to be found—for most states/colonies these are counties; for most New England states, towns.

A standardized, coded, format has been used to represent jurisdictional places to facilitate scanning or CTL-F searching: 2-letter US state postal codes represent US states/colonies; 3-letter codes (like “ENG”) represent other countries; and the elements of a jurisdictional place designation have been concatenated to save space. Thus, for example, “Augusta County, Virginia”, standardizes to “AugustaCoVA”, while Concord, Massachusetts is “ConcordMA”.

The interleaved notes about the DNA signposts for this patrilineage

The yDNA-tested male descendants are flagged below in blue, with their Project#s and the Nickname of the Principal Genealogist, e.g.  Alan-05). The full names of these people in the project Directory of Researchers may be clicked as links to contact them by email.

Inferences about the placement of the distinctive yDNA mutations of project members have been interwoven with their descendancies, below, in red text; please note, however, the careful qualifications in these DNA notes where they appear. Most inferences drawn from DNA evidence are probabilistic in nature and one needs to keep an open mind about alternative interpretations, just as one does with the genealogy itself.

The Top of the ALLEN Patrilineage 1 Tree in America

What’s posted here below, though evidence based, is somewhat more hypothetical than the set of patriarchal descendancies that follow, and it is considerably more subject to change. However, it represents, I believe, the most likely reconstruction of the top of the ALLEN tree, considering both the DNA evidence (chiefly the watershed mutation at DYS504), and the early genealogical evidence, which is very scant (but thoroughly exploited) for the mother counties of New Kent, Henrico, and later Hanover, in the Virginia tidewater.

In fact, it is precisely because of the scantness of the early evidence, and the likelihood that it will never be significantly supplemented, that I have somewhat relaxed my usually conservative criteria for posting lineages. Even when one is groping in the dark, it is crucial to both scientific and historical research to develop a set of strong hypotheses, both to guide the search for possible new evidence, or the rethinking of existing evidence, and to facilitate the evaluation of any new evidence that may unexpectedly emerge. And as pre-eminent philosopher of science, Karl Popper, has argued, since progress is made through a repeated cycle of propose, test, revise ... propose, test, revise ... etc., the best hypotheses are the boldest, because they are the most easily falsified, at least in part.

I thus offer the following in a spirit of Socratic inquiry, and invite criticism, provided that it is well-informed. I am highly confident about the reconstruction of the family of “3-David” below, and have backed that up with my paper “ David3 ALLEN of Brunswick County, VA, and sons Reynold4, William, and David ”, and have unpublished evidence and argument linking him to putativ father “3-Richard”.

As for the very top of the tree, having carefully examined the evidence, I have borrowed the conclusion of Jim Farmer that “2-Richard” of NewKentCoVA was the son of “1-William” of the same, and that William’s wife Sarah was probably Sarah HOLT, though I balk at much else in his paper. I am also fairly well convinced by my own extensive work with the patents of these mother counties, that 3-Robert was the son of 2-Richard, but I’ve added the other major ALLEN patriarch, 3-William of AlbemarleCoVA as 2-Richard’s second son, mostly just because he too appears in the parish records of St.Peter’s Parish

I’ve flagged the more frankly speculative elements below with questions marks and the unsubstantiated links by outlining them in tomato—|.

Early ALLEN Patriarchal Descendancies: Robert of Henrico County, VA

3-Robert Allen of New Kent, Hanover, Goochland, and Henrico Counties, VA, born say 1680

Sources: This Robert descendancy is the main focus of MILLERS, and except for the final generations connecting to the present, has been derived from MILLERS by John B. Robb.  It should be noted, however, that Melba Allen of Mississippi has an entirely different reconstruction of the top of this Allen tree.   Donna Bailey-08, and Mark Allen-30, who are descendants of this line through Robert->Robert->Josiah of South Carolina, have furnished additional material for their more recent ancestors.

3-Robert Allen (say 1680 NewKentCoVA - abt 1756 HenricoCoVA)

|--4-William Allen (say 1707 HenricoCoVA - abt 1785 GranvilleCoNC)

|   |   The evidence that this William of GranvilleCoNC was a son of Robert is his removal abt 1758

|   |   to GranvilleCoNC where he settled adjacent to putative brother, Drury, who was born in 1714.

|   |   William of GranvilleCoNC made a will in 1781 naming 13 children, including 10 daughters, of whom

|   |   Ursula (born 16Feb1728 to his first wife, and listed first in the will) was presumably the oldest.

|   |   This requires us to postulate a much earlier birth date for William than is found in MILLERS (q.v. 33,34,241).

|--4-Robert Allen (say 1709 HenricoCoVA - abt 1783 CaswellCoNC)

|   |   My guesstimate for Robert’s birth date is based on the fact that he first appears in the records of NewKentCo

|   |   in 1735 as a co-security with his father (Robert and Robert Jr) for John Pulliam’s widow and executrix,

|   |   because he is the grantee of his father’s deed of gift only later that year, and because before 1735

|   |   The evidence for this daughter is a bit tenuous: her putative husband, Arnold BRUCE,

|   |   was chosen in 1790 by Young’s 2 youngest children, Patty and David, as their guardian.

|   |   Also, later, Arnold BRUCE and family removed to IredellCo, and a daughter of Arnold & Celia

|   |   married a probably related David ALLEN.

|   |    There’s room for another daughter in 5-Young’s family, and I’ve slotted Celia here

|   |   because there were 4 children in the 1790 household of Arnold BRUCE.

They therefore presumably have an ancestor in common with these two:

4-William Allen of Mecklenburg County, VA, born abt 1726

SourcesDr. Bob Allen, and Diane Allen;
with additions by John B. Robb based on MILLERS, ALLENS OF CRIBBS CREEK, and the USCensus.

The mutation DYS504- occurred just upstream of William and his brother 5-Reynold of IredellCoNC,
and can be expected to mark most of their patrilineal descendants.

The mutation CDYb- that’s shared by William’s descendants, Dr.Bob-04, and Diane-22, but not by Lynda-09 or John-18, raises a small question. It probably occurred independently in the lines of Dr.Bob (who descended from William’s son Drury), and Diane (descended from son Meredith), but otherwise, since Lynda (also descended from son Drury) lacks this mutation, it suggests that Dr.Bob is also descended from son Meredith.

Early ALLEN Patriarchal Descendancies: William of Albemarle County, VA

invisible writing

3-William Allen of New Kent, Goochland, and Albemarle Counties, Virginia, born say 1687

Sources:  The major published source for this line is WICKER. Bill A. Allen, Donald Allen, and Rev. Rod Allen tie into this line, and the first two of these have published books which not only mesh with WICKER, but also elaborate their own lineages provide much colorful anecdotal and background information that brings their genealogy to life. The Rev. Rod has sponsored primary records research covering most of the few extant records of Buckingham County, Virginia, whence most descendant lineages have sprung. See Bill_A_ALLEN, and Donald_ALLEN.

The Unconnected Descendancy of James T. ALLEN of Wise County, TX

James T’s descendant, Bill_B-01 has the DYS504- mutation, which strongly suggests that James T descends either from the William of MecklenburgCoVA line, or from Reynold Allen of IredellCoNC.

The descendants of James T. Allen share the DYS413a- mutation, which presumably occurred shortly upstream of James;
they also appear to share a distinctive DYS464 mutation, but this needs to be further tested.
